Barangay Caniangan
Brief history of Barangay Caniangan
Barangay Caniangan was already inhabited as early as 18th and 19th century. But it was in 1935 when it became a barangay. According to local history, the name Caniangan is derived from the word maniangan. It is believed to be the name of a wild pig who was the leader of a herd of pigs, particularly in their search for food.
The first settlers of Caniangan were the the Subanens, (tribal group that inhabit the Misamis and Zamboanga provinces), Ceubanos from Cebu and Boholanos from Bohol. Mr. Laras Angcap, the Subanen tribal head owned a large tract of area in the barangay.
This barangay was the passage of Japanese soldiers during World War II as they surveyed the mountains of Simasay. One day, when the Japanese soldiers were on their way to Simasay, the people of Caniangan ambushed them. These were Isabelo Buenbrazo, Lovereno, Ricardo Luzano and Francisco Cabasag. They disarmed the soldiers. But through the effort of Mr. Sotaro Oca, the ambushed soldiers were released and taken back to their barracks.Mr. Sotaro Oka was a Japanese engineer who built the old city hall of Tangub City, old Catholic Church of Tangub City, schools of Caniangan, Bintana, Pangabuan and central school of Tangub. He also built the bridge of Barangay Pulot in Ozamiz City.Mr. Rufino Florida was the appointed as the first teniente del barrio; which included a set of councilors. They encouraged the people to cultivate the land for many years.
The elementary school was the first building ever built on the land donated by Mr. Vidasto Carillo. The first teacher was Mrs. Bruna dela Cuestra.
