Brief history of Barangay Lumban
Like other barangays of the City of Tangub, Barangay Lumban long time ago was occupied by natives called Subanens. As the years passed by, the tribe moved to the interior portion of the mountain to escape the increasing population of strangers coming from different places of Visayas and Mindanao.
The word "Lumban" comes from the name of shells predominantly abundant at the creek. The villagers were very surprised by the presence of these shells because these were only found in the sea.
Because of the presence of “lumban” shells, the people residing near the creek called the place Lumban. At present, portion of the creek was located at the Y- shaped road where the right-side road leads to Barangay Sto. Niño (previously Bongabong Dako), and the left side of the Y-shaped road leads to Barangay Catagan (formerly Sitio Lumbia). This creek presently joins the Malubog river.
In the past years, Barangay Lumban was a "sitio" of Barangay Kauswagan where the patron saint was "San Isidro Labrador".
In 1950's, Sitio Lumban constructed a new chapel where the patron saint was "Nuestra Seniora del Rosario" located at the upper portion back of the elementary school. By this time, Lumban inhabitants attended religious activities at their new chapel.
In 1965, the chapel constructed was transferred to the new site of the donated lot near the highway. Two years later "Sitio" Lumban became a separate barangay with an appointed Barangay Chairman, Hon. Gregorio Banawan for 15 years. After him was Hon. Agustin Opay (1982). He was followed by Hon. Justino Manlangit (1993). Hon. Agustin Opay came again in 1997. As of this writing, the barangay is headed by Hon. Cristituto Cantona.
