Barangay Silangit

Brief history of Barangay Silangit

Nestled at the food of the verdant Mt. Malindang, Barangay Silangit is situated on the western side of Tangub City. In the past, the place was darkened by shrubs and big trees but eventually cleared by the Subanen pioneers who tilled the land.  They settled in the area under the headship of Timoay Baluran, one of the early renowned Subanen leaders in Tangub.

The Subanens who inhabited the place used to buy goods from nearby Barangay Pangabuan and often trekked a hill known then and until now as “bungod sa ka Bodoy” in going to the vicinity. The towering landscape became a point of reference by the people who frequently passed by and set foot on it along the way. Hence, when the early Christian migrants coming from various places in the Visayas and Mindanao settled on the area, they gave the name “Silangit.” This referred to that prominent geographical landform jokingly dubbed by the people as already near the sky or heaven called “langit” due to its high altitude.

The Christian migrants came to acquire lands originally cultivated by the Subanon in exchange of items such as farming tools like bolo “guna,” tobacco and other valuable items. Being semi-itinerate, some Subanos sold their lands and transferred to other places in search for other lands to cultivate.

Barangay Silangit was created in 1928 by virtue of Republic Act No. 2370. Before it officially became a barangay, it once a mere “sitio” of Barangay Bintana, another barangay of Tangub. Flavio Ricaforte, became its first Teniente del Barrio who  was a committed public servant and   extended his service until 1995.

The fascinating view of Mt. Malindang and the tranquil waters of Panguil Bay can be seen in Barangay Silangit. Located in the interior of the barangay is the 40-foot drop of the magnificent  Titip Falls  surrounded by trees, shrubs and vines. At present, the people of Barangay Silangit devoted most of their time planting rice and corn which are considered as the main agricultural products of the barangay.
