Barangay Simasay
Brief history of Barangay Simasay
Barangay Simasay used to be a virgin forest. The place was covered with thick forest and several kinds of wild animals like monkey, wild pigs and deer were abundant in this place. The early dwellers of the area were the Subanens living through fishing and hunting along riverbanks and the forested areas. The Subano natives cleared the area and big trees were cut down. They cultivated the area and planted various crops that yielded abundant harvest from its fertile lands. The early Subanen settlers were identified by old people as Gumupot Subano, Sikala Subano, Gondanawon, Tarorong, Banogog, Bagaan and Oto Subano.
The Subanen settlers were headed by a "Timoay" who was revered by the natives as their leader and recognized as tribal chieftain. He was called by the people as" Masay;" who exercised command and authority over the tribe. Any concern of the tribesmen should be referred to and approved by him. When somebody outside the tribe would ask something to a native, they would usually reply " Si Masay" as what was customary for them to refer anything to their respected chieftain. Thus, the name of the barangay was taken from the name of this Subano chieftain.
In 1920, many Cebuanos, Boholanos, Siquijodnons came. They acquired farmlands and settled in the place. Other people from the Visayan region followed and established a permanent settlement in the area. With the increase of population, the people decided to build a chapel and they made the place registered officially in the government. It was unanimously agreed by the people that the name of the Subano chieftain "Simasay" should be retained as the name of the place.
By virtue of Republic Act 3590, Barangay Simasay was created as one of the 55 barangays of Tangub City. Restituto Ramirez was appointed as the first barangay captain. He was succeeded by Rosario Palermo, Ceriaco Calunsag, Serapio Pacquiao Sr., Gervacio Samonteza, and Benigno Rodriguez who served as barangay captains of the barangay respectively.
