Brief history of Barangay Balatacan
Balacatan is located in the Southern part of Tangub City. It is one of the oldest Barangays in Tangub. In the early years, thick bamboo grasses grew in the barangay. The indigenous subanen tribe wre said to be the original setlers of this Barangay. They called this place “ Balatakan” meaning origin of bamboos. When Christian settlers began to occupy the Barangay, the Barangay’s name was eventually spelled as “ Balatacan”.
In 1946, the coastal area or “baybay” was the center of the Barangay Santiago Pacaliosa was the original “Capitan or tentiente Del bariio”. In 1954, a Barangay election was held. Sixto Javier was elected as Barangay Captain,but because of his old age he appointed the first councilor ,Kagawad Diosdado Bautista Sr, to lead thye barangay. In 1984, Vicente Tan won the Barangay election held in that year. In 1986,finding it hard to lead and manage the Barangay,he relinquished his post. He then appointed the Barangay Secretary,Susan Tan,as OIC Barngay Captain.Susan Tan managed the Barangay until 1994 as OIC.Susan Tan was eventually elected as ABC President and sits the city council in year 1996-1998.year 1998 peter Perez won as Barangay Captain,who served for six years because he died last 2005,the first councilor Tiburcio Delos Reyes was appointed as the Barangay Captain. In the 2007 election he won as the barangay Captain of Balatacan.
The total land area of Barangay Balatacan is 217.1031 ha. Its topography is rolling,hilly, and with a coastal area. Situated just nine kilometers away along the asphalted national highway. The barangay is composed of eight puroks. At present commercial fishpond, rice fileds, cornfields and coconut farm are existing in the Barangay.
The Barangay has 262 households and has a growing population of 1316 where 648 are female and 668 are male. The residents along the coastline areas depend mainly on fishinh as their main source of income. And the Barangay are of Cebuano in origin and speak the local dialet,bisaya. The delicacy in Barangay Balatacan is “bibingka (rice cake)”.
Majority of the residents (205 households) are Roman Catholic. Another 12 households belong to the Philippine Independent Church or PIC. The rest belong to other religious denomination. The residents are engaged into fishing, and farming as the amin source of income. Only few are into employed and on small-scale business.
