Barangay Catagan

Barangay Catagan is situated in the western side of Tangub City.  The barangay’s first inhabitants were the Subanens.  The influential leaders of the tribe were Potugan Gadiason with his mother Maburing Gadiason and Po Catagan. They cultivated some portions of the barangay using the kaingin method and planted rice as their staple food.

                Potugan and his mother Maburing dug a shallow well near their huts.  But Po Catagan had abundant source of water as he was living near the river bank.  People from near Catagan fetched water for drinking and washing at Catagan’s.  Every time they were asked from where they fetched water, they would mention the name Catagan.  The name stuck, and even the time when migrants from the Visayas came, they were used to the name Catagan.  Up to this day, the name Catagan remained. 

                Before the barangay was officially named Catagan, this place had two names: Catagan and Sitio Lumbia which was a part of Barangay Kauswagan.  In 1968, Mayor Alfonso Tan joined the two names into what is now Barangay Catagan.

                The first teniente del barrio was Peo Orion (1928-1935).  He was followed by Pelagio Sugala, a Boholano, in 1935-1940.  Crisencio Chinsontic came in 1940-1945, Hervacio Sevilla in 1946-1948.  Eleno Reyes came in 1948-1954 and Dionesio Caballes followed in 1955-1968. These barangay leaders were all appointees.

                In 1968 election, Dionesio Caballes was elected and served up to 1990.  He was followed by Angel Baba in 1990-1995.  Felix Sarona came in 1997-2001.  He was followed by Avelino Rubia from 2002 up to the present.
