Brief history of Barangay Prenza

Local Knowledge has come up with several versions on hohw the name “Prenza” came about, but all of these stories carry one common thread: The name originated from the word “Penza” the local name for a stone built Fence across the branch creek of the Malubog river where the early inhabitants of this place usually did during the time of every summer so as make the creek runs dry and multitude of fishes and lobsters be caught easily.

One summer day in May 1943, the early inhabitants of this place  headed by Petronilo “Liloy” Caban together with his neighbors named Ambrocio “Amboy” Caban, Raymundo “Mundo” Maning, Avelino “Menong” Cañete, Florencio “Insiong” Mindo, Montano Cabonel, Crispin Carbonel. Pedfro Abatayo, Maximo “Imoc” Fernandez, Benito “Bentoy” Fernandez, Isidro “Doro” Cantona, Iniego “Iging” Asoy, and Nemesio “Mesio” Fernandez went to the creek to build a stone fence across the branch creek of Malubog River, the territorial boundary of Barangay Kauswagan and the present day of Prenza to make the creek runs dry and enables them to catch fishes and lobsters easily.

Suddenly, they were caught by the Japanese Imperial Armies who passed by them patrolling from Barangay Bintana to Polao. They were so afraid upon looking the Japanese armies pointing their guns to them. But, “Liloy” the leader of these inhabitants stood up and came closer to the patrol leader and answered the questions raised by the Japanese Leader. But because he was overwhelmed with his fears with the Japanese armies that he and his neighbors might be brought to the headquarter and placed in the stockage area for torture he erroneously answered the question asked on what place is this or what is the name of this place? For he thought that he was asked on what they were doing. So, he answered that they were building a “penza” a stone built fence across the creek for them to make the creek runs dry and fishes and lobsters be caught easily for their  viand at home since during that time the river was very rich of foshes and lobsters. But then, the Japanese leader could hardly uttered the word “penza” well. Instead, he uttered it as “Prenza” so they called this place “Prenza” by the time they made patrolling around.

On August, 16, 1974, , Petronilo “Liloy” Caban, with his neighbors come to a decision to form a small communitywith the total land area 319.9222 hectares to be ruled by the oldest inhabitants so that the place be separated from being a sitio of Barangay Sta. Cruz, and because “Liloy” was the oldest among the inhabitants so they decided to have Liloy as their leader of Prenza. Liloy’s leadership lasted until 1956. Then Roberto “Bentong” Gallardo Sibunga, province of Cebu came with his Family and settle his abode near the creek and had been appointed by the municipal mayor Epefanio Flores of the Municipality of Tangub to act as the “Tenyente” del Barrio of Prenza by virtue of R.A. 2370. Norbertos dominion lasted for eleven years and he was succeeded by Pablo Sacor who was the second official “Tenyente” del Baryo of Prenza. During the leadership of Pablo Sacor when the political boundaries of this place were clearly identified. Although there was no school buildings constructed. But, still he was able to establish a multi grade classes handed by Mr. Aneciti Siete of Oroquieta City handling grades I-III and Mr. Andres Angcap of Barangay Caniangan handling grades IV-V, held at the ground floor of Maximo Fernandez Residence. And in 1972, Mr. Deflin Solatorio was elected as the barangay captain with his six (6) councilors namely.
